Shower Surrounds – Parts and Installation
Shower surrounds can be expensive but, they help to protect the rest of the bathroom from the water. It helps to confine the water and keep it all in one place. Each enclosure has different ways for being maintained in the best possible way.
Shower surrounds have three different parts to them. There is the front where the faucet, showerhead and knobs are located, the rear, which does not actually have anything other than the wall so the toilet and everything else does not get soaked and the middle, which is where you can keep your soap, shampoo, razors, etc.
There are different ways for handling the installation of these if you are doing it yourself. The first thing you need to decide is if you want to put tiles all over the wall. There are many surrounds that just have the two sides and the bottom for those that like to line their walls with tiles. If you are adding tiles then make sure to get the proper adhesive and the grout that is going to fill in the gaps. If tiles are not for you then you can actually purchase these in a variety of different ways. They can be made of marble, fiberglass or even PVC. The shower surrounds can be purchased in one piece or many pieces for easier handling. If you want a tub included with the surround this can be found as well.
When thinking about purchasing a surround you need to decide exactly where you want to set it up. Once the location is decided then everything needs to be measured so you know which size to purchase. Remember to measure the handle, knobs and showerhead holes also, because this is all part of the actual surround. Like with many things they come in different sizes and shapes. Finally think about the color you want to make the bathroom so you will have an idea of the color of surround you want to purchase.
If this is a project you are going to do yourself then remember this will take time. The bathroom will have to be stripped where the shower surrounds are going to be placed. Things will have to be prepped before installation of the new one. If the store does not have the one on hand that you are wanting to purchase then it could take a couple of days to a couple of weeks before it is ready to be picked up. Once it has been picked up it could take a couple of days to a couple of months to install just depending upon how fancy you are going to get with it all.
